The History and Importance of National Flags
Everybody has seen a flag. These pieces of woven clothes are flown on top of poles or attached to massive walls. The practice of flying a flag is commonly referred to as flagging. There are many kinds of flags such as national and advertising flags. National or nation flags help identify countries that their people.
It is still uncertain when or where the practice of flags originated. There have been many flag-like symbols used since the ancient times. These symbols may have differed in material but it served the same purpose as the modern flags. That is to create an identity and encourage unity.
The ancient version of flags were critical in wars and battles. The chaotic nature of battles made it difficult to distinguish friends from foe. The flags which were flown on top of tall poles were visible from all parts of the battlefield and made it easier to identify warriors or soldiers and allowed commanders to have a better understanding of the situation and direct the their troops accordingly. The idea of sacrifice and working together under the same flag is a magnificent representation of countrymen working together to achieve the greater good.
You might not know it but some flags tell quite a bit of history. The stars in the American flag represents the states. The cross in Scandinavian flags reflect the shared history and Christian influence on the region.
