In order for advertising flags to be the cost-effective marketing tools that they are, they have to be durable enough to last for a long time without needing to be replaced. The lifespan of the flagpole dictates the lifespan of the entire flag package. The flag, pulleys, halyard and other accessories are relatively very easy and affordable to replace compared to the flagpole. The amount of labor to needed to replace a worn-down flagpole is more than that of a fresh installation since the replacement process often requires removal of the old pole from the foundation.
In order to avoid costly replacements, the flagpole must have the durability to last for a long time. The type of material used for the flagpole greatly influences its durability.
One of the most popular material used for flagpole is known as weathering steel. This kind of steel is used in shipping containers due to its ability to resist corrosion, one of the greatest enemies of flagpoles. When exposed to moisture, the rust that forms on the surface of the steel is dense enough to prevent further reaction between the steel and the oxygen.
Weathering steel combines the structural strength of steel with high-corrosion resistance that is further improved when coated with ceramic paint. Unlike other corrosion-resistant alternatives like aluminum and other allows, the price of weathering steel is not that far off from normal steel. This makes weathering steel worth considering for flagpole applications.
