The flagpole is one of the more expensive parts in setting up flags. The quality of the flagpole is very important in ensuring the safety of people and properties near the flag. The most commonly used material for flagpole is steel. It is both affordable and have great structural strength. But steel has a weakness.
Rain is the greatest enemy of the steel flagpole. Exposure to rain will cause steel to rust. As the rust digs into the steel, the structural strength of the flagpole is compromised.
It is very important to protect the flagpole against the rain and there are several ways to do this.
The first one is with the use of a protective coating. The steel pole can be painted with anti-corrosion pain. The paint creates a barrier between the surface of the steel to prevent rain and moisture-rich air from coming in contact with the steel which leads to rusting.
Aside from paint, there are other types of coat that can prevent rusting. Chrome coating is more durable than paint and improves the appearance of the flagpole by giving it a polished finish. However, chrome is expensive and much more difficult to apply.
Aside from coating, you can use a telescopic flagpole which can easily be lowered when it rains or during strong winds. And because the flagpole doesn't have to get hit by powerful winds, the rust-resistant but less sturdy stainless steel or other materials can be used.
